EUROFINS GENOMA FOR FORENSIC GENETICS
Forensic genetics focuses on the study and analysis of DNA, both for genetic identification (DNA profiling) and for determining kinship relationships.
Eurofins Genoma offers analyses for identification purposes and for the verification of familial relationships, backed by over 20 years of experience in the field. These tests are carried out for judicial authorities, technical consultants, lawyers, private investigators, and individuals.
For forensic genetics examinations (human DNA typing) commissioned by judicial authorities, the Milan facility has obtained accreditation under the UNI CEI EN ISO/IEC 17025:2018 standard, granted by Accredia. The laboratory is one of the few in Italy included by the Ministry of the Interior in the list of authorized facilities allowed to contribute to the national DNA database for investigative purposes.
Inoltre, Eurofins Genoma partecipa a schemi di verifica esterna della qualità, organizzati da società indipendenti e riconosciute a livello internazionale, che adottano modalità standardizzate per valutare l’accuratezza dei risultati.
EUROFINS GENOMA FOR FORENSIC GENETICS
The Laboratory carries out genetic investigations for personal identification and to determine kinship between individuals (paternity or consanguinity testing) using various biological substrates (blood, saliva, semen, bone, hair samples, paraffin-embedded biopsy tissues, touch DNA).
Identification analyses are performed by examining DNA extracted from various biological substrates using forensic-validated panels of genetic markers. Simultaneous characterization of this set of polymorphisms allows the construction of a specific genetic profile unique to each individual. The genetic profile obtained from a biological sample is then compared with that of a reference subject to assess the compatibility or incompatibility of their genetic characteristics.
The same genetic markers are also used to establish kinship relationships, which in most cases involve determining or excluding biological paternity. By analyzing the genetic profile, it is also possible to define other types of kinship, such as mother–child, grandparent–grandchild, sibling–sibling, and uncle–niece/nephew relationships.
